A greenfield plant in Uttarakhand
Bajaj Auto inaugurates its fourth plant, in Pantnagar, Uttarakhand. This greenfield plant has a capacity of 1 million motorcycles per annum and is also Bajaj’s first plant outside Maharashtra.

Capacity Expansion
Bajaj Auto commences production at a state-of-the-art plant in Chakan. India’s rising passion for motorcycling and the increasing demand for Bajaj bikes lead to this new production unit, a short distance away from its first factory at Akurdi.
Bajaj Boxer, the rugged, utilitarian motorcycle is born. Its exceptional durability and excellent value-for-money proposition make it an instant success. Subsequently, it went on to become a massive success in Africa.
Kawasaki Bajaj 4S Champion hits the markets. Its easy handling and small size are like a breath of fresh air for everyday commuters to slice through traffic with ease.
Sunny is introduced. The iconic brand changes the game in the two-wheeler market. College-goers find the 60cc engine and a top speed of 50 kmph super-cool and make it a bestseller.
The year is 1989. The nation-wide launch of the ‘Hamara Bajaj’ campaign takes the Bajaj scooter out of the realm of mere transportation and captures the imagination of resurgent India.
Bajaj Auto partners with Japanese automobile giant Kawasaki and launches the KB100 motorcycle. KB100 goes on to become a legendary two-stroke bike of its time.
Giani Zail Singh, the President of India, inaugurates Bajaj Auto’s Waluj plant (near Aurangabad). The plant starts production in a record time of 16 months.

1977
Launch of Bajaj Priya
Bajaj Priya – with a 150 cc, 2-stroke engine and three-speed transmission – is launched. Its trendy design and added features fuel its success.
Bajaj Auto launches its first three-wheeler goods carrier. The three-wheeler carrier would go on to support much of the growth in industry and entrepreneurship in India.
Bajaj Auto launches Vespa 150, under licence from Piaggio of Italy. Thanks to its peppy little engine and beautifully sculpted body, this global favourite becomes an instant hit in India.
1960
Bajaj goes public
Bajaj Auto becomes a public limited company. Bhoomi Poojan (groundbreaking ceremony) is done for Bajaj’s first plant at Akurdi. This plant would go on to become ground zero for many successful endeavours.
Can business serve society? A Gandhian family starts M/s Bachhraj Trading Corporation Private Limited on 29th November 1945 to answer this question. A company that would become synonymous with two- and three-wheelers in India.
